The output you posted had the same dvd::rip Perl process (PID 6819) for
both situations (blocking, non-blocking). So *sometimes* even dvd::rip 
0.98 succeeds? I thought dvd::rip 0.98 always fails while dvd::rip 0.52
always succeeds? Are you really sure 0.52 does *always* succeed?

Currently there is a thread in transcode-users which seems to discuss 
the same problem. There the situation isn't really clear, it looks 
sometimes everything works well, sometimes not. Probably you want to 
take a look at it and check, how this compares to your sitation:
