Hi there!
As it seems, there are quite a lot of problems with dvd::rip right now, which
probably relate to the fact, that so many dependencies (libraries, external
programs) have to be fulfilled.[1]
Couldn't someone build a somehow "static" version of dvd::rip, with all needed
stuff underneath one directory tree, and calls to external programs and
libraries happening only inside this tree?
I'd even go further: Why not build dvdrip distribution, let's say based on
"Damn Small Linux" or somethin the like? For some of us, it might be perfectly
acceptable to boot a different distro for ripping the one or other DVD,
wouldn't it? (You can even boot DSL from within Windows/Linux in a
qemu-enviroment!)
If something like this (distro or static version) has allready been done,
please point me to the right direction. If not, please let me know what you
think of this concept. I'd very much like to contribute; although I'm neither a
dedicated programmer [2], nor a distro builder.
Or could you specify a dependency tree, like:
dvd::rip-version-x.y.z
|_
| transcode-version-x.y.z.
| |_
| imagemagiq...
|_
| mkisofs...
|
|_
| etc.
|
|_
pp.
Then I would try to build this on DSL...
Looking forward to your feedback,
Andreas
[1] Mine, for example (on kubuntu 6.06) does rip any dvd, but it's not possible
to grab any preview images from the ripped files or even continue even further,
like setting the image ratio or encoding. :-(
[2] Well, I know Perl, PHP and bash well enough for my needs.
